Within a short period of time, German-born photographer Daniel Sannwald has emerged as one of the unique voices in contemporary photography. Working within the realm of fashion photography, without being restricted by its conventions, his images seek to merge fashion and art that result in surreal dreamscapes that are always memorable and thought-provoking. Having compelted his studies at the Royal Academy in Antwerp, Sannwald went onto to contribute for i-D, Vogue Hommes Japan, V, Qvest and of course Dazed (his shoot for Fashion’s New Optimism can be seen here). Over a ten year period, Sannwald has accumulated images that he has now reinterpreted into a book published by Heroes with texts written by Cecilia Dean, Ashley Heath and Sannwald himself. It investigates his interest in digital collaging as well as a more traditional retrospective. With influences and loves, cited in this interview with friend and Dazed contributor Kasia Bobula as wide ranging as Nelly and Roald Dahl, you’re sure to be in for a trip with this coffee table tome.

Daniel Sannwald is releasing a book published by Heroes out early 2010.

//My name is Tomislav Zidar, but as I discover new ways to express myself, I give myself a new name. Now you can call me Djuvedj Djuvedjevich. One of my games is to disassemble daily used objects such as telephones, toasters, shaving devices, computer parts, old toys, and typewriters, shortly, almost anything somebody rejected or gave to me to recycle. When torn into pieces, the objects reveal new shapes and start giving me ideas what they can be transformed into.

It all started as an idea when I ran out of materials doing little Fimo (some kind of plastic) sculptures, I started integrating pieces of junk from a table and connecting them to fimo mass structures. The starting material was forgotten in couple of days, and new ways to connect body parts started to evolve. As I grew up playing with Lego toys, I just continued the long forgotten experience… The whole thing has possessed my life for the past six years, and I play a lot with my little robot shaped toys, so somehow I started to show them to other people and it seems that they like them.

Anyway, the whole point is recycling anything that can be recycled, and most of the things can, maybe not toilet paper or condoms, but we can keep on trying. Result of this kind of game is never ending creative playing, and applying recycling to all aspects of living, even art…

SOUVENIRS D’ ENFANCE- la manufacture des automates
(Suveniri djetinjstva-manufaktura automata)

For the collection “Souvenirs d’ enfance”, she began a quest for the lost wonder-industry: the creations of automatons. An automaton is a machine which by means of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric or electronic devices, is able to do acts imitating the living body. The 18th century was a period of the “new” automaton, the android with a human face. Androids, as well as antique dolls with their exquisite fabric bodies and porcelain heads and busts, formed my inspiration for this collection. What was invisible becomes visible. The mechanism hidden in the insides of the dolls is revealed; the wind-up tool becomes an accessory and yet, retains its functionality. The ceramic bust, its silhouette, is literally recreated while the ceramic necklace, meant for a different silhouette, shows little of its origins.

Nodding to our own automated society, her interpretation reverses this process: man simulates the doll. A world of surrealistic figures that move in an incredible fashion mixed with a specific female iconography: it is a woman who carries the remains of her childhood with her as rudimentary elements of her physiology.
